The Champions League quarterfinal draw is done, and we have some incredible matchups. The new league phase format produced a more unpredictable bracket than the old group stage, and the eight remaining teams are all genuine contenders. Here's the draw, the analysis, and my predictions.

The quarterfinal draw

QF1: Real Madrid vs. Arsenal — The most anticipated matchup. Real Madrid's European pedigree against Arsenal's tactical discipline. Arteta vs. Ancelotti. This is a 50/50 tie.

QF2: Manchester City vs. Atletico Madrid — A rematch of their brutal 2022 quarterfinal. City's possession game against Simeone's defensive masterclass. Will Atletico frustrate City again?

QF3: Barcelona vs. PSG — Two attacking powerhouses. Barcelona's pressing vs. PSG's counter-attacking. This tie will produce goals. A lot of goals.

QF4: Bayern Munich vs. Inter Milan — A repeat of the 2023 semifinal. Bayern's power against Inter's tactical intelligence. This could go either way.

Real Madrid vs. Arsenal

This is the tie everyone wanted to see. Real Madrid are the defending champions and the most successful club in Champions League history with 15 titles. Arsenal are the team that everyone thinks is ready to win it but hasn't yet.

Real Madrid's strengths are clear: Vinícius Jr. is the best player in the world on his day, their midfield of Bellingham-Tchouaméni-Valverde is complete, and Ancelotti knows how to manage these big European nights better than anyone.

Arsenal's strengths are equally clear: they're the best defensive team left in the competition, Saka is lethal on the counter, and Arteta has built a machine that rarely makes mistakes. They don't need to be flashy — they need to be perfect.

Prediction: Arsenal advance on away goals after two tight 1-1 draws... no wait, away goals are gone. I'll say Arsenal 2-1 on aggregate. They'll defend brilliantly, hit on the counter, and edge it.

Manchester City vs. Atletico Madrid

If you like beautiful football, skip this one. Atletico will park the bus, waste time, foul strategically, and try to make the game as ugly as possible. City will pass the ball around for 90 minutes looking for an opening that might not come.

The 2022 quarterfinal was one of the most controversial ties in Champions League history. It ended in a brawl, and the football was secondary. Expect a similar vibes this time.

Prediction: Manchester City 3-1 on aggregate. They have too much quality, and Haaland will find a way to score. But Atletico will make it ugly.

Barcelona vs. PSG

Goals. This tie will be about goals. Barcelona under Flick play incredibly aggressive pressing football — they press high, they win the ball back quickly, and they attack in waves. PSG have Dembélé, Barcola, and pace to burn on the counter.

The tactical matchup is fascinating. Barcelona will dominate possession, but PSG's counter-attacks could be devastating. If Barcelona lose the ball in dangerous areas, PSG will punish them.

Prediction: Barcelona 5-3 on aggregate. It'll be end-to-end, and Barcelona's pressing will eventually overwhelm PSG.

Bayern Munich vs. Inter Milan

This is the dark horse matchup. Neither team is the favorite to win the tournament, but both are capable of making the final. Bayern's attack is lethal — Kane, Sané, and Musiala can score from anywhere. Inter's defense is organized and disciplined — they concede the fewest goals in Serie A.

Prediction: Bayern Munich 3-2 on aggregate. Bayern's firepower will be too much, but Inter will make them work for every goal.

Semifinal preview

If my predictions are right, the semifinals will be Arsenal vs. Manchester City and Barcelona vs. Bayern Munich. That would be an incredible final four. But this is the Champions League — nothing goes according to plan. That's what makes it the best competition in football.
