Champions League All-Time Best Players: The 10 Greatest Ever
The Champions League has produced some of the greatest moments in football history, and the players who've defined this competition are legends of the sport. Here's my ranking of the 10 greatest Champions League players of all time.
1. Cristiano Ronaldo
140 goals. The all-time top scorer by a massive margin. Ronaldo won the Champions League 5 times and scored in 3 finals. His record in the knockout rounds is absurd — hat-tricks against Atletico, Bayern, and Juventus. He's the greatest Champions League player ever, and it's not particularly close.
2. Lionel Messi
129 goals and 4 Champions League titles. Messi's performances in the 2009, 2011, and 2015 finals were masterclasses. His dribbling, his vision, and his ability to produce magic in the biggest moments made him the most feared player in the competition for over a decade.
3. Alfredo Di Stéfano
Won the first 5 European Cups with Real Madrid. Di Stéfano scored in every final from 1956 to 1960, including a hat-trick in the legendary 7-3 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. He's the founding father of Champions League greatness.
4. Paolo Maldini
8 Champions League finals. Five wins, three losses. Maldini played in the competition for over 20 years and was the best defender in the world for most of that time. His longevity and consistency at the highest level are unmatched.
5. Zinedine Zidane
That volley against Leverkusen in the 2002 final is the greatest goal in Champions League final history. Zidane won the competition as a player and then won it 3 times as a manager. His connection to the Champions League is unique.
6. Karim Benzema
90 Champions League goals and 5 titles. Benzema's 2021-22 season was one of the greatest individual campaigns in the competition's history — hat-tricks against PSG, Chelsea, and Manchester City in the knockout rounds. He carried Real Madrid to the title almost single-handedly.
7. Raúl
71 goals and 3 Champions League titles. Raúl was the all-time top scorer before Ronaldo and Messi surpassed him. He was the face of Real Madrid's European dominance in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
8. Andrés Iniesta
4 Champions League titles and some of the most important goals in Barcelona's history. Iniesta's performance in the 2009 semifinal against Chelsea — that last-minute goal — is one of the most iconic moments in the competition.
9. Robert Lewandowski
100+ Champions League goals across his career. Lewandowski's 2019-20 season with Bayern was perfect — he scored 15 goals in 10 games as Bayern won the treble. His consistency over 15+ years of Champions League football is remarkable.
10. Sergio Ramos
4 Champions League titles and the most important goal in Real Madrid's modern history — the 93rd-minute header against Atletico in the 2014 final. Ramos was a warrior, a leader, and a big-game player. He defined what it means to be a Champions League defender.
Honorable mentions: Xavi, Thierry Henry, Steven Gerrard, Clarence Seedorf (the only player to win the Champions League with 3 different clubs), and Erling Haaland (who's still adding to his legacy).
